What Are the Best Brain Training Apps?

As we described in a recent post, How to Improve your Brain Health, two key areas of the holistic brain health approach are: Connect and Discover. These two areas encourage social activity and engagement, as well as challenge your brain to learn new skills and hobbies and absorb information. One way to address these areas is using your smartphone or mobile device. In our research, we’ve found the four best brain training mobile applications out there are Lumosity, Elevate, Peak and Fit Brains Trainer.

The Top Brain Training Apps

Lumosity

Lumosity is split into sessions of three games tailored to your goals: memory, attention, problem solving, processing speed, or flexibility of thinking. The app, which is used by over 70 million people worldwide, will challenge your memory, attention, and more. Lumosity combines 25+ cognitive games into a daily training program that challenges your brain. The games are played against the clock and change every time. Developers say just one session a day can improve mental skills and users can track progress and compare performance with others. Lumosity is free for limited access, and $11.99 a month, or $59.99 a year for full access.

Elevate

Elevate calls itself “your personal brain trainer” and provides daily challenges created by experts in neuroscience and cognitive thinking to improve your comprehension and focus. Elevate has a strong focus on  communication, with games that revolve around spoken or written words. Elevate is a brain training program designed to improve focus, speaking abilities, processing speed, memory, math skills, and more. Each person is provided with a personalized training program that adjusts over time to maximize results. There are two versions of Elevate available: A free version, and the $4.99 per month Elevate Pro ($39.99 per year).

Peak

Peak combines brain science and gamification to give users a full-spectrum brain workout, testing users’ focus, memory, mental agility, problem solving, and language skills with a variety of daily minigames and goals. Peak games are designed in collaboration with experts in neuroscience, cognitive science, and education. You can play for free or upgrade to Pro and get the best brain training experience available (1 month for $4.99 or 1 year for $34.99)
