“Caring Village really hits home for me. I come from a very close and big family. I was born and raised in Arlington, Virginia and both of my parents grew up in Arlington as well. So, I have a lot of family in the area and my grandparents were a huge part of my life. In 2008 at the age of 93 my maternal grandfather died leaving my grandmother alone after 69 years of marriage. Shortly after my grandfather’s death, my grandmother’s health began to decline. It was important to her that she remain living in her home. We all immediately pitched in to keep her quality of life as high as possible. But then she needed 24 hour care and we had to find home health aides, make medical decisions, make her home wheelchair accessible, pay her bills, and most importantly ensure she was surrounded by those who loved her.

We kept a calendar indicating which home health aid was coming when, which Aunt was spending the night, which cousin would come by for lunch that day, which Uncle would mow the grass, which sister would take her to her doctor’s appointment, and on and on….. All the while, her phone would ring and greeting cards would come in from around the country from her grandchildren and extended family. My cousin in California wanted an update, her niece in Kentucky wanted to make sure she received a card she sent, my Aunt would want to know her most recent blood pressure screening, and another cousin in New York wanted to make sure she saw the recently uploaded pictures of her great grandchildren.

My grandmother lived another 6 years and was able to die peacefully in the bed she slept in for the last 55 years, surrounded by those who loved her. It took a Caring Village to care for my Nana. Luckily, we had numerous family members to help, but if Caring Village would have been available, it would have saved us a lot of time, headache, and stress. There is clearly a need for this. I am so excited to be a part of a team filling this crucial gap in the caregiving community.”
